A Thermo King refrigeration unit

Whether you own your own Thermo King reefer – or it’s the property of the company you work for – you want to make sure it is kept clean and continues to run smoothly. One of the best ways to ensure its performance is up to par, is to perform preventative maintenance. Cleaning and servicing the refrigeration unit will cut down on costly maintenance as well as keep the contents of your hauls clean and free of harmful bacteria.

What you will need to clean the Thermo King refrigeration unit

It’s always smart to be proactive and have your supplies handy before starting any project – cleaning a Thermo King refrigeration unit is no exception. To give your reefer a good cleaning you will need to have the following things close by. A protective eye mask or goggles to prevent a splash in your eye. You’ll need rubber gloves, a 5-gallon bucket, an industrial strength refrigeration unit cleaner and a wide broom. You will also need a garden hose, an electric power washer with heat – and don’t forget the trailer boom.

Steps for cleaning your Thermo King refrigeration unit

Step 1. Make sure the refrigeration unit is turned off and remove any hardware or palettes from the cargo space. This is a good time to put on your protective eye goggles and rubber gloves.

Step 2. Mix the cleaner with water in the 5-gallon bucket – by using a ratio of five parts cleaner to ten parts water (5:10). This solution will go into the power washer.  Next, connect the power washer to the garden hose.

Step 3. Turn the power washer heat to low – and the spray to high.

Step 4.  Spray the unit, starting with the ceiling first – then each wall. Spray the wall from top to bottom. Lastly, spray the floors. Using the wide broom, make sure you get into the grooves in the floor to remove all dirt and debris that has collected since the last cleaning.
