Thermo King Innovation Is Driving The Future Of Refrigerated Transport

Thursday, September 28th, 2017 Published By: Patrick Logan

Technology is making it more efficient and effective to deliver the goods and services clients and consumers depend on. As time gets short and distances stay the same, it has never been more important for carriers to have the best tools to keep their loads rolling down the road. Thermo King has long been a leader in the refrigeration unit market and their new temperature controlled units incorporate significant technological advancements that make them easier to use, easier to manage, and easier to maintain. The reefers they are producing enhance connectivity and give businesses the data-driven intelligence they need to make better decisions regarding their fleets, routes, and schedules.

Thermo King Innovation Means Big Savings

Thermo King is innovating both single and multi-temperature refrigeration units. These innovations are designed to cut fuel consumption and have the ability to reduce fuel consumption by between 10-20% which can add up quickly as the fleet rolls towards its destination. The company has also included improved telematics that provides drivers full information on the conditions within the reefer, the conditions of the cargo, and any issues that may be developing. This information is also transmitted back to the unit’s dispatch so that it can be tracked and addressed in real-time.

Thermo King Innovation Brings Remote Control To The Market Place

The remote unit management and data transfer features with Thermo King refrigeration units make it easy to remotely control conditions within the reefer. This means that dispatch or the driver can make adjustments without having to be physically present. This saves time, saves money, and most certainly, can save a load from thawing or melting along the way.

Thermo King Innovation Means Precision

In addition to the advanced telematics, new Thermo King refrigeration units are more precise in their measurements. The Precision Temperature Controls are so precise that they reduce deviations in the temperature reading by 80% and can control the temperature to within roughly.15 degrees of the setting. This creates considerable reductions in fuel usage that literally keep money from flying out of the back of the truck. Further, the system can be pre-programmed to meet the client’s precise specifications regarding optimal temperature settings for the produce and other goods they wish to transport.

Thermo King Innovation Promotes Environmental Friendliness

Thermo King refrigeration units also offer a significantly reduced impact on the environment. Lower engine speed and reduced fuel consumption are possible because the condenser coil is 27% larger than in the past. Each new reefer cuts CO2 emissions by as much as 2.4 tons or roughly 15% greater than previous models. Thermo King refrigeration units also feature the more efficient R-252A refrigerant which is far less harmful than the older R-404A.

Thermo King Innovation Has An Eye On The Future

The company has even produced Hybrid trailers that enhance savings, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Indeed, the fuel savings on a Hybrid unit can add up to 1,500 gallons or more per year. And, it is just the beginning. The company has pledged to take even greater steps in the future to reduce the impact of their reefer units on the environment and by 2020 the company aims to reduce the impact of the refrigerants they use by more than 50%. This commitment and the other advancements the company is introducing in their trailers means that companies that utilize Thermo King for their clients will be well positioned to drive long into the future.

These refrigeration units are CARB Evergreen Certified for seven years which means Diesel Particulate FIlters are not required for their operation.

Like the single-temperature units, the multi-temperature refrigeration units deliver double digit fuel savings, superior temperature controls, and real-time fuel monitoring and recording. This makes it easy to determine whether the unit is functioning the way it should, or whether it may be time to schedule a service call.

Thermo King is Going Green

Thermo King is a leader in green technologies for refrigerated transportation solutions. Several years ago the company rolled out a new refrigerant, R-452A that reduces operating costs and increases performance and efficiency. It was among the very first steps taken by refrigeration companies to go green. Of course, companies develop new products all the time. What makes Thermo King stand out is that the company chose not to patent the product so that other companies, end users, and the environment could all benefit from the product.

Add Ons That Go The Distance

In addition to reliable refrigeration systems and eco-friendly refrigerants, Thermo King also manufactures custom accessories that can be paired with each refrigeration unit they produce. These include Thermolite Solar Panels, CargoLink Wireless Sensors, and the PrimAir Management System. These can be coupled to the trailer to enhance the performance and efficiency of the system. This further reduces operating costs and enhances reliability. Businesses can plow these savings into their business to hire more drivers, deliver more routes, and expand their operations for the long-haul ahead.

Tips On Cleaning Out A Refrigerated Trailer

Friday, February 10th, 2017 Published By: Patrick Logan

It is essential to keep your Refrigerated Trailer in pristine clean condition. Whether transporting meats, vegetables, fruits, dairy or other goods, the risk of contamination and spreading bacteria and the food borne illnesses they cause is ever present. Thorough cleaning procedures and attention to standards can minimize the risk and keep your refrigerated trailer in peak condition for years to down the road.

Start by Gearing Up

It is essential to use the right tools when cleaning out your refrigerated trailer. Fortunately, the tools you need to use are inexpensive and easily purchased. Your kit should include a protective eye mask and rubber gloves for the driver. These minimize exposure to contaminants by keeping the driver safe from backspray and blowing debris.

You will also need to secure a heated electric power washer with a hose sufficiently long enough to reach into the deep recesses of the trailer. This is essential because a normal garden hose with spigot simply can’t deliver the pressure required to dislodge debris such as blood, fats, and other debris.

Finally, be sure that you have a solid reefer trailer broom with rigid bristles and a notched shape. This can help dislodge debris and ensures that the water is efficiently removed from the trailer during the final clean-up process before drying. It also ensures that it won’t sweep over debris that’s lodged itself deep within the grooves of the cargo floor.

Preparing for Cleaning your Refrigerated Trailer

Start by turning the refrigeration unit off prior to cleaning and removing any palettes, meat hooks, or hardware that may be located within the cargo space. This helps protect components and fixtures from damage. Any items that are removed should be cleaned while they are outside the trailer.

Once the trailer is empty, mix industrial refrigeration detergent with water within the power washer. Be careful to follow the detergent’s instructions in regard to the proper ratio to adhere to. This is crucial for ensuring a thorough clean that kills any bacteria and germs.

Cleaning the Refrigerated Trailer

Start by using a high power spray with a low heat setting. It is advisable to start on the ceiling and work your way from the front of the trailer toward the rear door.

Once the ceiling is cleaned, work your way down the walls. Again, start at the top of each wall and work your way down. Once the walls are cleaned, use the broom to sweep out the water.

Finally, once the trailer has been given a deep clean, it is important to give the trailer a thorough rinse. This step removes the final bits and particles that may have been blown about during the cleaning process. It also removes any chemical residue left by the cleaning agent.

To rinse the trailer, drain any remaining water/detergent mixture from the power washer. Refill the unit with water and set the spray to “high.” Once ready, spray from the front of the trailer towards the rear, again starting high and working your way towards the floor. Once the trailer is thoroughly rinsed, sweep out the puddles on the cargo floor and allow the container to dry.

While it takes a little bit of time to properly clean the refrigerated trailer, it is time that is well-invested. Not only will a thorough cleaning keep the trailer and components in good condition, a clean trailer won’t transport bacteria and contaminants that can spoil the cargo and cause major headaches for your company.

We look forward to working with you.

Thermo King Refrigeration Units Operations and How They Affect Expenses

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016 Published By: Patrick Logan

Individuals who operate refrigerated trailers are often fairly knowledgeable about their businesses. However, even the most experienced individuals are the first to tell you that they don’t know everything when it comes to their reefers. As long as the reefers are doing their job and allowing companies to stay within their budgets, the majority of trailer users aren’t too concerned about the specifics of their refrigeration units. Thermo King offers a wide range of features to set themselves apart from the competition and give their users the best experience possible to increase productivity and ultimately, drive more sales.  In most cases, proper operation of the refrigeration units can significantly reduce overall expenses.

Thermo King Refrigeration Units Running Modes

The running modes determine how much fuel is burned and the amount of maintenance that’s required for the refrigeration unit components. The running modes also control the consistency of the perishable items’ temperatures within the trailer. The age and condition of the refrigeration unit as well as ambient temperatures and the trailer’s insulation value affect the frequency and duration that the refrigeration unit runs.

Most commodities, such as paint, canned goods, beverages, and candy, hold up under 5 to 10-degree temperature swings in either direction. However, some commodities require steady temperatures, which means the refrigeration unit must run continuously. Drivers must negotiate the acceptable temperature range with each shipper to help keep operating expenses as low as possible.

Thermo King recommends that drivers document fuel use and running times for every shipper and every product. This information will come in handy when shippers want to negotiate rates or temperature ranges. Sometimes shippers don’t understand why they don’t need the reefers to run continuously. Supplying current data will help a driver make a case for a temperature range to save on operating expenses as well as wear and tear on the refrigeration unit.

Trailer Use and Care

Drop-and-hook operations save companies money by drastically reducing driver waiting times. However, when left unsupervised, you never know what customers will do with the refrigeration units. Telemetry enables remote, real-time monitoring and may reveal potential abuse of the reefers.

Running a reefer while the doors are open during a delivery or when the vehicle is parked elsewhere wastes energy. Many customers do so anyway because they don’t know better or because it’s simply convenient. If customers insist on running the reefer while the trailer is docked, make sure the engine runs at a lower RPM to reduce fuel usage.

Select the highest insulation value available while still allowing adequate cube in the refrigeration unit. The lower the value or UA figure, the better. A low UA may be issued to a trailer with three inches of insulation in the roof, floors, and walls. It may also allow a refrigeration unit to use just half of the fuel of a reefer with a high UA number because of the mere one inch of foam in the walls and two inches in the floor and roof. However, the low UA trailer will have six percent lower volume and may weigh an extra 200 pounds, resulting in the tractor burning extra fuel to pull it.
