Safety Precautions When Servicing Thermo King Components and Systems

Tuesday, June 28th, 2016 Published By: Patrick Logan

When servicing Thermo King components and systems, it is crucial to follow safety precautions as recommended by the manufacturer and highlighted in the Thermo King maintenance manual. Make sure to thoroughly review the proper procedures for service and repair before performing maintenance on your Thermo King unit. If you are uncomfortable with any service recommendations, consider hiring a professional to take care of all of your maintenance needs. Please refer to your current maintenance manual for complete safety precautions and service instructions. These are just a few highlights of the safety precautions for your Thermo King unit.

General Safety Precautions for Thermo King Components & Systems

Always wear safety goggles or glasses when servicing Thermo King units. You could come in contact with refrigerant liquid or battery acid, which can be detrimental to your eyesight. Another important thing to remember is to always keep your hands, clothing and tools clear of the fan when the refrigeration unit is running. Other general safety precautions include taking care around the coil fins (which you could cut yourself on), using extreme caution when drilling holes in the unit, and being sure to service the unit in a well-ventilated area. For all general safety precautions, be sure to reference your updated Thermo King maintenance manual.

Refrigerant & Refrigerant Oil Safety Precautions

When servicing Thermo King units (or any refrigeration unit), it is essential to make sure that no refrigerant escapes into the atmosphere. In their liquid state, refrigerant liquids can cause severe damage and harm. The liquids evaporate quickly, and can freeze anything they contact – even causing severe frostbite.

Extreme care should be taken with refrigerant oil. Any contact with eyes, skin or clothing should be tended to immediately. Refer to your maintenance manual for specific first aid instructions.

Thermo King Electrical Safety Precautions

As with most machines and refrigeration units, the risk of electrical shock is always present. Even if the unit is not running, care should be taken when it is connected to a power source. When servicing your Thermo King unit, be sure to turn OFF the unit before disconnecting the main power source and be sure the plug and outlets are clean and dry before reconnecting the power source. As with any electrical source, beware of metal tools and treat all electrical wires as high voltage wires.

Thermo King Units with a Microprocessor Controller – Special Safety Precautions

If your Thermo King unit is equipped with a microprocessor controller, you’ll need to take extra precautions to prevent electrical discharge. If the proper discharge procedures are not followed, there is a high risk of damaging the electrical components.

Pre-trip, 1,000 Hours & Annual Service Inspections

According to the Thermo King service guide, specific parts of your unit should be inspected and/or serviced pre-trip, after every 1,000 hours and annually. Beside the visual pre-trip checks and checking basic fluid levels, it may be wise to contact a professional for your thousand-hour and annual service needs.

Trust your Thermo King Components and Systems to the Professionals

When servicing Thermo King units, follow all highlighted safety precautions in your updated Thermo King maintenance manual to protect yourself from harm and prevent damage to components. If you are not properly trained to service your unit or feel uncomfortable with the procedures in any way, contact a professional to take care of your maintenance needs. Trust your Thermo King components and system maintenance to the professionals at West Texas Thermo King and know that your unit is in good hands.
